ACTIVITIES
There is plenty to do in and around De Laarakker – from walking and cycling to soaking up some culture or simply doing nothing at all.

hiking
De Laarakker is situated right on the transition from rural to bustling: on one side you look out over fields, tree lines and expansive skies, on the other side lies the Haps industrial estate.
From the farm, you can truly walk into tranquility. The immediate surroundings offer space and tranquility, with routes that wind along fields, dikes, and forest edges. Hiking trails quickly lead you into nature – towards heathland, forest, and river – with the Maas and Waal rivers as recognizable anchors in the landscape. Think of the Mookerheide, the Reichswald, or the Sint-Jansberg – areas with elevation changes, vistas, and a chance of encountering a deer or buzzard; although you'll see them on our property too. Nijmegen's city routes are close by, including sections of the famous Four Days Marches route.
Whether you're out for a brisk morning walk or a day hike with a picnic, there's plenty to reflect on.

shopping
From small specialty shops to large shopping centers just across the border – if you love shopping, you'll be in the right place here.
Nijmegen offers a vibrant mix of boutiques, bookstores, vintage shops, and sustainable concept stores, all within walking distance of charming cafés and terraces. The city is known for its inclusive atmosphere and unique character, which is also reflected in its shopping options. Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere will find a handful of unique shops and regional products in charming towns like Grave, Gennep, or Cuijk, often with personal attention.
And if you want to go big, just a fifteen-minute drive into Germany: in Kleve and Goch, you'll find drugstores, fashion chains, and supermarkets with a unique selection. In short: from mindful browsing to stocking up – everything is within easy reach.

going out and eating
The region also offers plenty of culinary and cultural discoveries. In Cuijk, Gennep, and Grave, you'll find charming restaurants, waterfront terraces, and small eateries where local and fresh produce take center stage.
Nijmegen offers a wide selection of world cuisines, wine cafés, concert halls, and several Michelin-starred restaurants for those who have something to celebrate. For a night at the movies, there's the cinema in Malden: a luxurious cinema with spacious seats, a surprising selection of films (from blockbusters to smaller films), and personalized service at your seat.
In Haps, you can walk to the best ice cream parlor of the Netherlands, and those who prefer a quieter dining experience will find several hidden gems along the water in Cuijk nearby. From casual to unique – the region invites you to sample, relax, and be surprised.
art and culture
Not only Nijmegen offers a rich cultural breeding ground – there is also much to discover in the surrounding regions.
Arnhem is less than a 45-minute drive away and is home to the Netherlands Open Air Museum, Museum Arnhem, and the creative Fashion Quarter in Klarendal. Across the border, Kleve offers a modern art museum in a former castle park wing, overlooking a baroque garden. Also discover small museums with character in Deurne and Etten-Leur, often within walking distance of beautiful nature. In Cuijk, for example, you'll find a Roman tower with a view and a museum (Ceuclum), in Sint Agatha the oldest monastery in the Netherlands, and in Mill the heritage-rich Tongelaar Estate. The War Museum in Overloon is impressive without being bombastic, and in Horst you'll find De Kantfabriek—a museum about textiles and labor with a surprisingly contemporary feel. In Berg en Dal, you'll find the Africa Museum, and in small towns like Grave and Gennep, you'll find exhibitions, summer concerts, and galleries featuring work by local artists.
From contemporary art to historical stories: for those who travel with an open mind, cultural surprises await at any distance.

cycling
From De Laarakker, you can cycle straight into the open air. Dike roads meander along the Maas (Meuse) and Waal rivers, through ancient villages, tree-lined avenues, and open countryside. Whether you enjoy recreational cycling or prefer to pedal hard on an e-bike or mountain bike, the routes here are varied, well-organized, and rich in panoramic views. Both the ANWB and Komoot offer excellent routes—from short loops to day trips to the Mookerheide nature reserve, the Sint-Jansberg, or the Reichswald.
Towards Nijmegen, you'll cycle along floodplains and through ribbon villages brimming with history and restaurants, while on the other side you'll cross the border into Germany, where the landscape becomes more undulating and surprisingly quiet. Along the way, you'll encounter chapels, picnic benches, and vineyards.
A relaxing morning stroll or a long trip with rest stops and detours: this is a region that is perfect for exploring on two wheels.
or simply nothing
Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need. At De Laarakker, slowing down comes naturally. The silence of the landscape, the rhythm of the day, the vastness of the sky—it invites you to just do nothing. A book on the terrace, a nap in the afternoon sun, coffee in the morning mist. No plans, no rush. Just the birds, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional passing tractor.
And when evening falls? You don't have to go anywhere. At the B&B, you can take advantage of all kinds of movie and series subscriptions—from popular platforms to surprising gems. Fancy a classic, a documentary, or the latest series everyone's talking about? Chances are it's there. All you have to do is choose.
